Review, Character Interview, & Giveaway: THE HITWOMAN AND THE FAMILY JEWELS by JB Lynn

Update – Congratulations to Silver for winning JB Lynn’s giveaway! Thank you to all who participated!

If you haven’t read any books in the Confessions of a Slightly Neurotic Hitwoman series you are missing out on a seriously funny and entertaining series. Download the samples from Amazon or Barnes & Noble and you will see why! You can even pick up a free copy of The Hitwoman Gets Lucky on Amazon. Today, I got the pleasure of interviewing Patrick, the hero in the series and JB Lynn is giving away a digital copy of one of her books.

About the Book:

Official Summary:

How do you say “no” to a mob boss?

When bumbling hitwoman Maggie Lee is asked by her mob boss employer to kill a cop, she wants to say no.

When her sexy murder mentor, Patrick Mulligan tells her the cop in question is a guy she once dated, she REALLY wants to refuse.

But when her former date, Paul Kowalski tries to kill her, she changes her tune to “Hell, yes!”

Maggie and Patrick grow closer as they scramble to figure out what it is that Kowalski is looking for and what it has to do with her prison escapee father.

So Many Reads Review:

I simply love the Confessions of a Slightly Neurotic Hitwoman series.  My friend Misty Evans mentioned them to me and after I read the first one I just couldn’t wait for the next ones to come out. In the fourth story of the series, we find Maggie in yet another pickle of a situation. She is asked (well, demanded really) to kill someone that she actually knows personally. She isn’t sure about it at first but then quickly changes her mind after an altercation with him. This time around though instead of chasing after him she is running from him with US Marshals and a certain Detective (that we all know and love) guarding her. On top of that her father has escaped from prison which has complicated her life tremendously. Luckily she has family and friends that want to help her in their own strange way.

For those that have read the other books you know how fun it is when Maggie communicates with her animals Doomsday (DeeDee), and Godzilla (God). Another animal is added to the mix – a cat named Piss. Yes, Piss. You will have to read the story to know why. We also get to see a lot more of my favorite, Patrick. JB does a frustratingly good job of building Maggie and Patrick’s relationship throughout the series because it fits each of their personalities well and doesn’t take away from the overall story. I really want Maggie and Patrick to kick it up a notch and for him to get rid of that wife of his.

I would love to see JB’s books made into a movie. The scenes are very clear in my mind thanks to her descriptions and would be great fun to watch on the big screen. The dialogue in The Hitwoman and the Family Jewels is by far the best part of the story. Because the characters are all so well written and have their own wacky personalities you get the best conversations. This is what has me laughing out loud all the time. In addition to the humor in this series, I really like that no matter the disagreements Maggie’s family has with one another, in the end they are always there for each other. There are some serious parts in the book and the support from her family just makes it all better. I almost feel like I worry less while reading the story when I know her family is behind her.

The books in the Confessions series just keep getting better and better. JB ends the story with quite an explosive scene and of course I look forward to the next book to find out what happens. If you are looking for a light romantic suspense read that is full of humor and warms your heart, I highly recommend you try The Hitwoman and the Family Jewels!

Interview with Patrick Mulligan:

Amy (with So Many Reads): Thank you, Patrick for allowing me to interview you. I know you like to keep a low profile.

Patrick: I certainly do. I take Rule Number One, Don’t get caught, very seriously. Maggie’s assured me that you’re trustworthy so I’m taking a chance. You don’t want to make me regret that.

Amy: First of all, how did you get started in the contract killing business?

Patrick:  It wouldn’t be prudent to share the entire story with you here, but I will say that, like Maggie Lee, I fell into it by accident.

Amy: You are also a very good detective. How are you able to walk both sides of the line so well?

Patrick They require a lot of the same skills like observation, patience and dogged determination to do the right thing. I walk both sides by compartmentalizing. As a rule, I don’t allow crossover between my detective work and my hitman duties. Maggie’s not too happy with me in THE HITWOMAN AND THE NEUROTIC WITNESS because of the way I compartmentalize my responsibilities.

Amy: Why did you agree to be Maggie’s Murder Mentor, or did you have a choice?

Patrick: It’s not a healthy practice to say “no” to the Delveccios on a regular basis. Besides, I was intrigued by and attracted to her the first time we met. If I hadn’t agreed, she probably would have gotten herself killed.

Amy: Is Maggie the only one you mentor?

PatrickRight now? Yes.

Amy: What is it about her that causes you to always be there for her? You seem to be her Knight in Shining Armor even when she doesn’t think she needs it.

Patrick:  The woman “stopped, dropped and rolled” to take out a mobster. She’ll do whatever it takes to take care of those she loves even though her family is pretty messed up. Plus, even though she doesn’t seem to realize it, she’s sexy as hell. Who wouldn’t want to help her out?

Amy: Do you find it odd that Maggie talks to her animals like they can understand her? Or is that just a quirk you like about her? She is good with animals.

Patrick: I find it odd that a grown woman subsists on olives and Lean Cuisine meals. It’s kind of cute the way she talks to her pets. You know what they say about pets and unconditional love, right? Sure her bond with them seems a little…intense sometimes, but I think they give her something that the people in her life don’t. And you’re right, she IS good with them. They way that one-eyed cat took to her was amazing.

Amy: What do you think of Maggie’s family?

Patrick:  Her dad is a criminal. Her mother resides in a mental health facility. One of her sisters was murdered. Another died in the car accident that left Maggie as guardian of her niece, Katie. Her surviving sister is a prostitute. One of her aunts is a drug addict. Another is an aging sexpot. And the third tends to be hard on Maggie because she’s the “normal” one and can take it. I think her family is a nightmare, but Maggie loves them all.

Amy: Not only is Maggie’s life complicated, but your personal life is a little complicated. Do you think that will ever change?

Patrick: I hope so. My kids are grown. My daughter’s mother has found happiness with someone else. Now if only my son’s mom, my wife, would do the same, my life would be less complicated….except for the whole hitman/police detective thing.

Amy: I am guessing she has already called you about what happened to her at the end of Family Jewels (or maybe she hasn’t and I am going to get her in trouble)? What can we expect in the next book?

Patrick: No Maggie didn’t call me, but I do know what happened. In the next book you can expect the return of Zeke, a woman who may be able to see ghosts (not the kind of person professional assassins should be around…after all, we’ve created ghosts) and Maggie and I at cross-purposes as we chase after the same target.

Amy: I will stop interrogating you for now. Thank you again and best of luck!

Patrick:  Thank you for having me. Maggie is right, you do seem trustworthy.

Hi, Patrick, and JB! I must admit I have a bit of a fangirl crush on you, Patrick. And I’m a firm believer in Jethro Gibbs’ rules, especially these two:
Rule #9: Never go anywhere without a knife
Rule #23: Never mess with a Marine’s (or author’s!) coffee… if you want to live.

Looking forward to July because I love-love-LOVE this series!

    1. jblynn

Thanks, Silver. I’m partial to #23 myself!

    2. Amy

Hi, Silver! Thanks for stopping by. I think I need to go read more of Jethro Gibb’s rules. 🙂
