Interview with Cameron:

Amy (with So Many Reads): Thank you so much for the letting me interview you, Cameron.

Cameron [Kicks back in his office chair and gives me a little smile.]: Thanks for coming by the garage. Sorry I haven’t stripped the artwork out of the bays. What did you think of it, by the way?

Amy: Um, well, the pictures are interesting. I am not sure the female customers will care to look at them but the males probably will. Moving right along. Can you tell the readers a little bit about yourself – why you left Shelbyville and why you came back?

Cameron: I’m a pretty boring guy. What you see is what you get. [When Amy lifts an eyebrow, he sighs and shifts in his chair.] Fine, if you wanna be bored, it’s no big to me. I grew up here as the son of the town saint and the town drunk. I have a little…ah, younger…brother Jamie. He’s now a big shot lawyer down in Houston. I left Shelbyville after high school on a football scholarship to UT (University of Texas). Sophomore year, I took a bad hit and ended up strapped to a backboard at Seton Hospital. That was all she wrote. Just as well because it was Jamie’s turn at school, and he’s a damn sight smarter than I am. I found good work, work I liked, fixing up cars. I’m hell on wheels with a spot welder and a paint gun.

As for why I came back? It was time. Jamie’s got plenty of money doing what he does and my mom’s on her feet as well. They don’t need me to bankroll them any more. That means I can hunker down and play with my cars.

Amy: What is your favorite memory of Shelbyville while growing up?

Cameron [He scratches his chin, and we can hear the rasp from his stubble.]: Probably playing baseball on the old high school field. Turth be told, I loved it more than football. But in Texas, football is king and it was the only thing that was gonna get me to college.

Amy: What does Shelbyville have that a big city doesn’t?

Cameron [That brings a true smile to his face.]: A gossip train faster than those things over in Japan. Neighbors you know. My mom, Emmalee. And apparently, one very hot, surprisingly outspoken town princess.

Amy: Where is the best place to eat in Shelbyville?

Cameron: I can tell you where it isn’t—Dirty Harry’s, the dive out on Highway 12. If Clyde offers you anything outta that kitchen, run like hell the other way. I can usually handle anything, but I ate some of Shirlene’s chili once. [Shakes his head.] Well, what happened after—that’s something I can’t even talk about in mixed company.

Amy: What was your first impression of Allie when you came back? You guys had quite the reunion when you arrived in town.

Cameron: Straight-up spoiled. Sitting up there in that damned Escalade like she hadn’t just injured my best girl, BB. I wanted to pull her out of that SUV and wrap my hands around her pretty little neck. [Yeah, Amy has an idea that wasn’t all he wanted to wrap his hands around…]

Amy: What is the biggest surprise that you learned about her?

Cameron: She was a few years behind me in school, but my impression of Allie Shelby was untouchable. Not because she was a snob, but her dad’s a bank president and mine was pretty much the CEO of Drunks R Us. We weren’t in the same social set. When I came back home and learned she’d opened this…this…counseling thing, I about shi…uh…coughed up a brick.

Amy: What do you think about Allie’s business – Personal Assets?

Cameron: Now? I’m proud of what she does. She cares about the women she works with and they think she hung the moon. But before, when I found out my mom was one of her clients? [He rubs his right temple.] I’m pretty sure I blew an artery. In fact, it still bleeds in there when I think about my mom and her…you know…love life.

Amy: I gotta ask – did you ever expect the Allie to do what she did in your office or did that completely surprise you? If that’s too personal of a question, I completely understand.

Personal Assets finalCameron: [Cameron’s gaze goes immediately to the 1960s-era metal desk in front of him.] Well, I’m not about to chit-chat on the details. [Then his eyes narrow and his chin goes up.] Wait a minute. If you’re asking me about it, then you already know the damn details, don’t you?

Amy: I know what happened but I am curious what you thought about it. Not the details of it.

Cameron: I swear to God, my life hasn’t been my own since the moment Allie propositioned me at the baseball field. Talk about knocking me on my ass. That woman has been one continual surprise after another. As for the…uh…scene in my office, [Now, he’s rubbing the desktop fondly, and I’d bet anything he doesn’t know he’s doing it.] I thought she was still pissed at me for the way I reacted to what I thought she was doing—manipulating me and my family. But damn…she sure proved me wrong. Doing what she did? Takes a lot of trust.

Amy: When did you realize you were falling for Allie?

Cameron: You know, probably that night when I found all those damned notes about me being some kind of special sex project. Pretty sure that’s the reason I completely lost my cool. I’ve never had a woman high-tail it out of my house like Allie did. She didn’t even bother to put her panties back on before she was out the door. Obviously, I was an idiot.

Amy: What is next for you and Allie?

Cameron: Well, my mom wants grandbabies and she’s been pretty vocal about it. That being said, I’m living with Allie in her tiny doll house right now and as much as I’d eventually love a little princess who looks just like her mama, that house just isn’t big enough for kids. [His smile is broad and mischievous.] Probably I should ask Allie to marry me first too.

Amy: Aww. I think you should too! Thanks so much for joining us today!

Cameron: Any time. You just c’mon back. Believe me, there’s more happening here in Shelbyville. I’ve seen the way my brother looks at Roxanne Eberly’s personal assets. Something’s gonna boil on that stove soon.

  1. Oops! Looks like I posted this in the wrong place the first time around!

    Amy –

Thanks so much for having Cameron on So Many Reads today. He’s gotten an early start in his garage this morning, but is happy to stop by and chat if any of your readers have questions for him.

  2. Congrats on the new release Kelsy. Love a good romance with a little humor mixed in and this one sounds like a great read.

Cameron…Do you have a nickname for Allie that you would like to share?

  3. I have a question for Cameron – boxers, briefs or commando today? I know his mom gave him some good advice on always wearing clean underwear. 🙂

  4. Question for Cameron, I know you have your car in the book, but what other classic cars do you like. I personally like the muscle cars 🙂

  5. Fabulous interview!!! Kelsey, I’ll have to read this book!
Cameron, You should start a Little League Baseball team!!!! Encourage kids to play baseball and that football isn’t the only big thing.

    Thanks Amy!

    • AuntieMissMaria –

First off, quite a name you’ve got there.

What boy doesn’t dream of being a sports star? Back then, I sure thought I’d end up playing centerfield for the Astros one day. Life didn’t pull any punches, and I didn’t end up anywhere close to Minute Maid Park. But you know what? I found out life sometimes knows better than you do exactly what and who you need to be when you grow up.

  6. So I realize that in my crazy fan-girl moments interviewing Cameron I didn’t think to put a time limit on the So Many Reads wine charms giveaway. So sorry! That is a pet peeve of mine when blogs don’t put when a giveaway will end, so let’s say it will be open until 11:59 pm central time on Saturday, August 31, 2013. 🙂
