Today at So Many Reads, we are celebrating the release of Joan Swan’s Rush, the third book in her Phoenix Rising series. It is simply incredible. My review can be found here. Today’s celebration includes a very entertaining interview with the hero and heroine of the story, Quaid and Jessica as well as some awesome giveaways, so let’s get started!
Interview with Quaid and Jessica:
Amy (with So Many Reads): Thank you so much for taking the time for this interview, Quaid and Jessica. I am honored to have you here.
“Good to be here.” Quaid slides a half-grin toward Amy. “But let’s not make a habit of it. Jess and I have a lot of catching up to do.”
Amy: I just finished reading your story and wow. So many questions I have, but then again, so do you. Because your story is so intense, I’ll try to go easy on you for the interview.
Jessica: “Oh, you can ask anything.” Jessica waves Amy’s concerns away with a thoughtless flick of her hand. “I talk enough for both of us.”
Quaid slides that grin toward Jessica and his mouth quirks up a little more. “Uh, no, baby. Amy can’t ask anything. And I’ve learned how to cut off your chatter. Don’t make me do it in public.”
Jessica punches Quaid’s bicep.
Amy: Jessica, how did you and Quaid meet and what is it about Quaid that had you falling in love with him?
Jessica sighs. Her body softens and she leans into Quaid’s shoulder. “Oh, we met at work–the fire station in Truckee.” Her eyes close dreamily. “I’ll never forget the first day I saw him when he’d first come on board.” She opens her eyes and they sparkle at Amy. “He walked into the engine bay in ancient blue jeans, worn white in all the right places–if you know what I mean, a duffle thrown over his shoulder and a smile so bright it seared my insides to jerky.”
Quaid watches Jessica intently as she speaks. His gaze narrowes. “Were you…” he asks softly. “Were you washing one of the engines?”
Jessica bites her lower lip, hope leaping in her deep brown eyes. “Maaaaaybe,” she says with a tease in her voice. “What else do you remember?”
“Come on, Jess,” Quaid says, “You don’t have to hide memories anymore.”
“I know. But it’s such sweet relief when they come back to you on their own. Just try.” She rests her chin on his shoulder and pouts up at him with big, puppy eyes. “For me?”
He sighs, closes his eyes, tilts his head back. “Okay, this might just be a fantasy…” His laugh was rich and suggestive. “But, I swear to God I see you in jean cutoffs that barely cover that perfect ass of yours, a wet white T-shirt showing off your bra beneath and…Christ, freaking turnout boots riding up your calves.”
He opens his eyes and they burn hot as he gazes down at Jessica’s grin. “If that’s a fantasy, I want to reenact it. Hell, even if it wasn’t a fantasy, I want to reenact it.”
Jessica laughs and glances at Amy again. “As you can see, there’s a lot to love about this man, but… What I loved most, what really made me fall…hard…” she said, turning back to Quaid, “was the way he was a buffer between me and my family. They didn’t approve of me choosing the fire academy over college. Quaid won them over and allowed me to keep a close relationship with them despite our differences.”
Amy (still a little in awe of what just happened between Jessica and Quaid): Quaid, Jessica was the “woman of our dreams” when you were held prisoner. Why do you think you remembered her but no one else?
He considers seriously as he stares at their joined hands. Then looks up at Amy and says simply, “She’s always been my true North.”
Amy: Wow. That is so incredibly…wow. Now that you guys have been reunited, how do you plan to make up for lost time?
“In bed,” Quaid jumps to answer, then shoots a wicked grin at Jessica. “A lot of time in bed.”
“Don’t forget the dining room table,” she says softly.
“Or the patio furniture,” he adds.
“Or the hot tub,” she laughs.
Amy clears her throat.
Amy: Jessica, you guys are different than you were before the warehouse fire. What is different about your relationship now compared to then besides the obvious time apart?
“Oh,” she sobers immediately. “It’s so much deeper. So much more immediate. We don’t plan for the future as much as live in the moment. We’ve both been through hell and appreciate every second we have together.” She squeezes Quaid’s hand. “We lost each other, so we know the value of a second chance and we never take each other for granted.”
Amy: Quaid, what do you think of your friends? I know you are still getting to know them again, but so far, which one is the craziest to you? Which one, besides Jessica and Cash, do you feel the strongest bond with at this stage?
“Pains. In. The. Ass.” He chuckles. “But also loyal, accepting and fun as hell. But…still…pains in the ass. Cash is my best friend. My true brother. Always will be. Aside from Jessica, he’s the only person who gave me something to live for all those years. Without Cash, I wouldn’t be alive.”
Amy: Jessica, how has the team changed? Who has changed the most in personality?
“The team, like us, is stronger. And like us, they’ve experienced the worse. As a team, we’ve grown up, learned to set aside petty differences and stick together to keep everyone safe. We’re more grounded, more mature, and more cohesive than any family or group of friends I’ve ever met. It’s a good feeling to know a group of people like that have your back.”
Amy: What is next for you guys?
“Bed,” Quaid said, grinning. “Back to bed.”
“Quaid.” She bumps his shoulder with hers and turns back to Amy. “Our focus is solving this mystery. None of us can move on until we know what happened and why. What we were exposed to and what the long-term affects might be. There are children involved, couples that want to move forward and have children. To complete our lives, the answers have to come out.”
“So serious,” Quaid teases in a murmur. “I’ve got to get you back to bed, loosen you up.”
“Me? Serious? Coming from you?” she quipps with a fake frown. “And we’ve got to work on bending your mind onto another track.”
He lifts his brows. “Really.”
“Eventually.” A slow grin softenes her eyes. “But…I guess there’s no rush.” Jessica turns to Amy and grows more serious. “Mitch has given up a lot for the team and he’s found himself in a tough spot. We’re all dedicated to helping him as much as he’s helped us. That’s the next immediate goal for the group.”
Amy: Thank you both so much for stopping by and for the interview. I wish you both the very best!
Jessica and Quaid speak at the same time.
“Thank you,” Quaid said.
“Thanks for having us,” Jessica said.
They look at each other and laugh.
“I said it first,” Quaid teases, wrapping his arm around Jessica’s shoulders and pulling her close.
“Did not. I so spoke first.” She glances at Amy. “Didn’t I Amy?”
Amy: I am not getting in the middle of this. You guys need to get out of here and spend some time alone, apparently.
