Review: HER FORBIDDEN HERO by Laura Kaye

What an emotionally intense story! I thoroughly enjoyed Her Forbidden Hero by Laura Kaye. While the cover of the book is very hot, it doesn’t do the book justice. The story is so much deeper than a physical attraction (even if there is plenty physical chemistry, too). To me, it’s about a deep friendship that turns into deep love.

HFHMarco is Alyssa’s older brother, Brady’s best friend so they have grown up together. When Alyssa and Brady’s mother died and her father turned to the bottle and took it out on his kids, it was Marco’s place that became her safe haven. Marco and Brady took care of Alyssa until she graduated high school and went off to college. Marco and Brady head to the army and become Special Forces and Alyssa goes off to college. Fast forward four years and we are at the beginning of Her Forbidden Hero.

The day Alyssa goes looking for a job at a bar where Marco is a bartender, Marco is quite surprised and happy to see her. His protective instincts kick in because he doesn’t want her working in the rowdy place. He still thinks of her as a little sister to his best friend, but realizes she is all grown up now and some new feelings start to surface.

Laura does an amazing job with Marco and Alyssa. The emotions from both of them are so raw and real and brought tears to my eyes many times. Marco has been so defeated since he was discharged from the army and doesn’t feel as those he is worthy of much of anything so he becomes quite the recluse. Alyssa does her damnedest to show him otherwise by just loving him the way she has always known how. Alyssa, herself is a little lost after graduating college and trying to make ends meet. Marco is there for her as always in offering her a place to stay and wants to take care of her. Alyssa isn’t helpless any longer. She isn’t the little girl she once was. She knows she wants Marco and always has, but is starting to wonder if it will ever work out or if Marco will ever see her as more than Brady’s sister. Alyssa also wonders if Marco will ever be the man she once knew.

The story is engaging from the beginning and is hard to put down because you want so badly to find out what will happen to both Marco and Alyssa. I really enjoyed the supporting characters in the story, especially the appearance of Brady. I love watching best friends together, whether its kicking each other’s asses or supporting one another. If you are looking for a raw, emotional, contemporary romance about two people who were once lost and find their way together, I highly recommend you give Her Forbidden Hero a try.
