Review: OFF THE EDGE by Carolyn Crane

Reading this book was a such an adrenaline rush! Off the Edge by Carolyn Crane pulls you in from the first few pages and has you on high alert until the very end. I love these types of books – the ones where I feel as though I need to look over my own shoulder in case one of the characters has jumped out of the book. Off the Edge is the second book in Carolyn’s Undercover Associates Series, but can be read it as a stand alone.

OffTheEdge-CarolynCrane-500x750In Off the Edge we meet Laney, who is on the run from her abusive ex-husband and Peter, a linguistics expert from The Association. Peter is trying to track down a ruthless arms dealer who is about to auction off an extremely dangerous weapon. This auction takes place at the hotel where Laney is employed and thus, Laney and Peter’s paths cross.

At first, I did not like Peter. He was all business, had all these walls he refused to let anyone cross and wanted to use Laney to get what he needed. Laney is such a sweet and compassionate person with a big heart who has been dealt a bad hand in life, so I was feeling pretty protective of her.

Carolyn does a magnificent job of pulling the emotions out of these two characters. They find a connection with each other they haven’t found in anyone else. I was a little surprised at how “easy” Laney seemed to be at the beginning of the story. I kept thinking a girl in her shoes wouldn’t do some of those things, however, as I got to know her it made more sense. I loved watching Peter come apart and be “pummeled” by Laney. I also love that it is all about the words for the two of them. It is so much bigger and more intense than the physical attraction, although they had plenty of that, too – so hot. Peter and Laney are meant to be together and it was proved over and over throughout the story.

The story line with the linguistics piece was brilliant. I couldn’t seem to get enough of it. There were times I was confused by some of it, but it only caused me to slow down my reading (it is a fast paced book and I had to get to the next scene) and think about what Peter was explaining and how he fit the puzzle pieces together. It’s always great watching intelligence like that work.

As for the other parts of the story? Holy cow. So much is going on! Carolyn was great at fooling us, too. I like being surprised by who we can trust (hated to find out who we couldn’t). Who is undercover? Who is on our side? How is this all going to end up when it looks like there is clearly no way out? Carolyn does a fantastic job of wrapping it all up in the end. I thought the way it played out was perfect. There are a couple of people whose opinion of the final events I would like to know, but it did not effect the story. If you are looking for a fast paced, action packed romantic suspense that also has some very sweet, romantic moments, I recommend you read Off the Edge.

Book Summary:

For deadly secret agent Peter Macmillan, language is a weapon—one he uses to hunt criminals, destroy plots, and charm enemies. Seducing information out of a beautiful singer in Bangkok hotel should be easy…except this particular singer has the power to destroy his cool façade, and with it, his last defense against a dark past.

He tricked her. He helped himself to her body and her secrets. He has enemies everywhere. Laney Lancaster should hate Peter, but when she discovers him shirtless, sweaty, and chained up in the hotel’s dungeon, all she can think about is freeing him. Because she knows what it’s like to be trapped and alone. And she could use a dangerous friend.

They may be wrong for each other, but the instant they join forces, Laney and Peter are plunged into an odyssey of hot sex and dark danger. To survive, they must trust each other with their lives—and their hearts.
