I just finished Beyond Love by Barbara J. Duell and I liked it. It opens with David, an 8 year old boy, who decides he is going to visit his grandmother in Los Angeles. Of course he has no idea how to get there from San Francisco and after almost being run down by a car is saved from that accident by Michael, one of the main characters in the book.
Michael is a woman who has experienced her own tragic accident and is angered and outraged by the fact that David’s father seems to have neglected his son to the point of his running away to his grandmother. As all of this is sorted out with Dr. Richard Hampton, it isn’t long before Michael finds herself being a nanny to David. What evolves after this is a series of accidents, misunderstood emotions and an unraveling of Michael and Richard’s pasts.
I grew to really like the heroine, Michael but I must admit I grew impatient with Richard and his cantankerous moods. I found that some of the characters behaviors were a bit tiresome and I really wanted to tell them to act their age. However, I also enjoyed the streak of independence and assertiveness that Michael displayed throughout the story. There was just enough hidden mystery to hers and Richard’s past that kept me reading for more and of course I am always looking for that happy ending.
Barbara Duell has told a delightful story about two mismatched characters who find their way past their differences to the things that make them well suited for each other. It was a delightful romance that left me smiling and feeling all is well with the world after I read it.

About the Book:
He’d only planned to run away from home, but after eight-year-old David Hampton is almost run over by a car in downtown Sausalito and rescued by a beautiful lady with a man’s name, his plans change. All he’s ever wanted was a Mom and decides Michael McCall is the Mom he wants. All he has to do is convince his dad, and maybe Ms. McCall.
It should be easy, but unlike stories with happy endings, this is not a fairytale; this is real. When Professor Michael McCall and Dr. Richard Hampton meet, the sparks from their first encounter ignite into an instant desire so powerful it rivals the intensity of the fire that nearly destroyed the city across the bay. Their path to happy-ever-after will demand that they travel beyond their lust and the heat of their passion — a journey steeped with pain, a constant reminder of love given and lost — a journey where the past must be put away, freeing them to find the courage to reach BEYOND LOVE.
