Review: HER SUMMER WITH THE MARINE by Susan Meier

In Her Summer with the Marine: A Donovan Brothers Novel by Susan Meier, Ellie McDermott has to return to her small hometown that she had preferred to be left behind. Her father is ill and needs her help and the only way to support him is by working in the family business, a funeral home. Ellie was running from the rumors spread after her mother’s death and also from Finn Donovan.

HSwtM_500Finn was her main competitor from childhood through high school and everything changed one night 9 years ago when Finn needed as escape and found it in Ellie’s arms. Unfortunately, it was only that one night and Ellie was upset that feelings she had were not reciprocated. The past is brought back to life when once again Finn becomes her competition as he has recently opened up a new funeral home in this small town. Their antics escalate throughout the story as does their chemistry which obviously never died. The problem is only one of them can come out a winner in this business and unfortunately they both need to win since Finn needs this to support his mom as much as Ellie needs this to support her dad.

This book was cute and a relatively quick read. I always love coming home stories. The great thing about this one is there is healing and forgiveness. Issues Ellie had with the people of her small town were addressed, resolved, and she made some new friends along the way. Finn, well, I really liked him. I think he was at times a little too hung up on the notion that love is pointless and relationships can’t work, but he was good at heart and sexy too. The illustration of Ellie and Finn’s relationship with their father and mother, respectively, were beautiful. Ellie’s struggle with her father and his disease brought me to tears. Seriously, my husband was wondering what was wrong with me.

The only downer for me was the businesses. Couldn’t they have been a cute coffe shop, or bar? Why a funeral home? It just wound up being a little morbid to me and honestly I couldn’t figure out how a bad ass marine wound up in that field and the same thought about BB. Despite this, I did enjoy the story and would readily recommend to others.

Book Summary:

Their competition has never been so irresistible

The last person Ellie McDermott wanted to run into after returning to her hometown is Finn Donovan, her high school nemesis and the guy she crossed the line from enemies to lovers with one night years ago. Now ex-military, tattooed, and still sexy as hell, Finn is a complication Ellie doesn’t need—she needs to concentrate on saving her family business.

Finn’s entire life, Ellie was there, going head-to-head with him in every class, bee, and test. So it’s no surprise she’d show up just as he was about to take over her father’s struggling business. It is a surprise, though, that his attraction to her is even more explosive than it had been. Acting on their attraction is one thing, but Finn has to turn a profit to save his own family, and nothing—not even love—will get in his way.
