Review: READY TO WED by Cindi Madsen

In Ready To Wed by Cindi Madsen, Dakota Halifax had everything going for her: her business as a wedding planner is growing, her wedding advice column in a local paper has a huge following, and she’s about to get married herself.  But then her fiance dumps her at the altar and suddenly Dakota is not sure about love or even how she is going to work through her heart ache while planning other people’s weddings.  The only bright spot in Dakota’s life is that her childhood BFF, Brendan West is back in town. Except Brendan has grown up into a very sexy man and she’s definitely feeling things she shouldn’t feel for her best guy friend.

Dakota is a great character to get to know.  Her snarky sense of humor and retelling of wedding disasters had me laughing.  Her color code alert system for bridezilla’s is priceless.  I loved how Dakota dealt with every curve that was thrown at her and did it with her head held high.

The relationship between Brendan and Dakota was interesting to watch evolve.  Both were extremely cautious having been burned in the past and neither wanted to ruin the great friendship they had. Madsen does a great job in slowly moving their relationship from friends to lovers. It would have been so easy to have Brendan and Dakota jump in bed immediately, but instead she let it progress slowly, which made for an enjoyable and believable read.

I can’t finish this review without mentioning the cast of supporting characters.  From Grant, Dakota’s ex, to Phoebe, a jealous social column writer to Wild Bill, a tattoo artist that Dakota meets in anger management class.  They all added to the story and help Dakota find her way with Brendan.  The eclectic assortment of characters in the book even more interesting because they seemed like normal people you would find in real lifr.

This was my first read by Madsen and I have to say I really enjoyed it. It was a satisfying read that has me looking forward to her other novels.  Anyone who enjoys contemporary romance and is looking for a good summer read should definitely check this book out!
