In Cowboy Crazy by Em Petrova, the Daltons have a huge ranch and 5 sons to help run it. With an eye to the future, the Daltons strike a bargain with their bachelor sons: get married and they will get a part of the spread. Four of the Dalton boys set out on a “wife search” in the city while Hank Dalton stays home to help. Coming home one night, he runs across a beautiful stranded motorist. Hank not only offers to tow Charlotte’s car but also offers to do the repairs himself for the cash strapped traveler. Could it be that the skittish Charlotte might just be “the one”?
The city slicker meets cowboy story has been done a lot in romance (especially in Westerns). Petrova manages to keep a classic theme fresh with her well developed characters. I found myself rooting hard for Hank to win Charlotte over and convince her stay as his bride.
I also enjoyed that Charlotte was very much an independent woman. Despite starting off as a damsel in distress, Charlotte quickly adapts to her new surroundings. She even refuses to take Hank’s charity and learns new skills on the ranch to help pay for the repairs to ber car.
My only complaint about this story was that it was too short. I knew it was a novella but I so wanted it to be longer! I am definitely looking forward to the next book due out in October.

Five brides for five brothers…at least that’s the deal the Daltons have struck with their boys. Each son must marry in order to inherit a piece of the ranch they love so much.
Hank Dalton yearns to run his own spread, but more than that, he longs for a woman to call his own. Paradise Valley is far from civilization, though, and that makes finding the perfect match difficult. Not many women like being two hours from a major supermarket or mall.
Charlotte Halton is on the run. Poor choices have left her with scars—in and out. After her powerful boyfriend left her drugged and set their apartment on fire, she’s just trying to put the pieces of her life back together. Abandoning all she knows seems like the best decision she’s ever made. At least until her car breaks down in the middle of cattle country.
When a pretty little woman is delivered into Hank’s hands, he believes it was fate that kept him from joining his brothers for a “wife hunt” in the city. But she’s leery of men and hiding something dark. Can Hank tap into the attraction they both feel before she drives away?
