Review: EMBATTLED HEARTS by J.M. Madden

I have been told by so many friends to read the Lost and Found Series by J.M. Madden. I was really intrigued with the series after reading the The Embattled Road. Embattled Hearts is the first full length novel in the series and follows the guys many years after they have started their Lost and Found Investigative Services. It is not at all what I expected, which is still why I am not sure how I feel about it. I found myself not wanting to put it down, yet, the feeling I came away with it is a bit neutral.

17340459Embattled Hearts is John and Shannon’s story. The two of them have been working together for about six months and both have feelings for the other one but have yet to act on them. That all changes when John takes up a short term residence at Shannon’s house to protect her due to a stalker. While under the same roof, feelings start to come out and they slowly start up a relationship. John is the same stubborn hard ass he has been since was injured serving his country and Shannon is just the right girl for John, not putting up with his crap.

While I really enjoyed the story and the relationship building between John and Shannon, I just didn’t feel the connection to either of them that I wanted to. I don’t think it was the lack of depth of the characters, as I saw a lot of growth and change in both John and Shannon. Maybe it was because John made me angry often and I couldn’t get past that. He was grouchy and even though I knew why, it made me angry since Shannon was so sweet to him and loved him so damn much. I thought the intimacy between the two was fantastic. It stayed pretty true to what you would expect from the characters and fit the story well.

J.M. Madden delivers a story that is not your typical romantic suspense story. She brings characters that are still dealing with injuries while fighting as Marines. Life isn’t the same and they are still learning how to deal with all of it. I have not read a book like Embattled Hearts before, so I am still trying to warp my mind around it and looking forward to reading the rest of the books. If you like military romance, I recommend you give Embattled Hearts a try.

Book Summary:

John Palmer hasn’t felt like a real man since he was injured during combat in Iraq. Though not content with his new life, he is mostly adapting, just like the other vets at the Lost ‘N’ Found Investigative Service. When Shannon Murphy is hired on as the new office manager, life suddenly gets a lot more interesting. Before long, John finds himself wondering if he could ever be the kind of man Shannon needs.

Shannon Murphy wasn’t really looking for love when she hired on at LNF, but finds herself hopelessly attracted to the sex-on-wheels former Marine, John Palmer. The man is grumpy and nearly impossible to work with, but his brand of masculinity appeals to her on a basic level.  Soon Shannon is wondering just what it would take for John to want her the way she wants him.

When an old enemy tries to settle a vendetta against Shannon, John insists on protecting her.  He moves into her house, fanning the spark of attraction into a blaze.  But the danger continues to escalate. Will the connection that they’ve found survive when they’re thrust into a fight for their lives?

Thank you! This book is on my #1 list and I think it will be good for me to be prepared for John. I will probably be frustrated with him to but maybe less so since I know it is coming. I have enjoyed other books my JM Madden and look forward to the L&F series.
