In When You Make it Home by Claire Ashby, Meg Michaels has a huge secret. She’s pregnant but doesn’t want anyone to know. For now she figures she can hide her growing baby bump with loose clothing. At a welcome home party for Theo Taylor, an injured veteran, Meg becomes sick and decides to lay down. Unfortunately, Theo wants to do the same and discovers Meg’s secret. The two strike up an unlikely friendship but will it be enough for both of them to get a happily ever after?
Have you ever read a book and get annoyed when life interrupts? Maybe mull over the characters and plot as you are driving to work? That was how this book was for me. Once I started I had to find out what happened! What I liked best about this book was the different subplots. I know that sounds strange but honestly once all the loose ends were tied up, it made for a wonderful story. Ashby weaves such a delightful tale of friendship, love, heartache, and what makes a family.
I also enjoyed her treatment of Meg and Theo’s romance. Theo is an amputee and Ashby tackles the subject head on. Neither character shys away from the subject either. The romance between the two is interesting because it starts out so rocky. Meg was constantly waiting for Theo to abandon her just like her previous lovers.
This was a wonderful debut novel from Ashby. I can’t wait to see what her next book is about. Anyone who likes romance or women’s fiction will truly enjoy this well crafted novel.
