Review: CHARMING THE BEAST by Cynthia Eden

I could not put down Charming The Beast by Cynthia Eden.  I stayed up way too late one night finishing it since I just couldn’t leave the characters hanging! As with the other books in the Purgatory series, the overall story ARC centers around the FBI’s Para Unit – a group of humans and paranormals sent to bring justice to the criminal paranormals of our human world. The books seem to get better and better.

charming-the-beastIn Charming The Beast, we read about Connor and Chloe. You meet them in Marked By The Vampire and I would highly recommend you read the first two in the series before reading this one. It will make a lot more sense. Connor and Chloe are probably the most interesting couple of the series so far. They are not your typical werewolf or vampire. They are something different and figuring that out is part of the fun of the story. Charming The Beast picks up where Marked By The Vampire leaves off. Eric Pate, head of the Paranormal Unit along with other characters we meet in the first and second book continue their mission. What I find very satisfying about this series is that while it centers around one unit with the same characters, each individual story is so different. You don’t feel like you are reading the same story over and over.

Connor is one badass dude. We learn he is not JUST a werewolf. He is a mixed breed and oh so freaking powerful. Chloe is paranormal, but her powers are somewhat inconsistent and that frustrates her. Connor is assigned to guard her and keep her safe. Hard to do when she wants to just run and be free from all of this Para Unit crap and a dangerous, evil wolf and his pack are hunting her.

The romance between Connor and Chloe is not what I expected. It isn’t as hot as Shane and Olivia’s in the second book, or even like Duncan and Holly’s in the first book, The Wolf Within. I will admit that I didn’t fall in love with the idea of Connor and Chloe right away. They didn’t seem to click right away for me however, their relationship progress and I loved them together in the end. Cynthia does a fantastic job of tailoring the love stories and intimate scenes to her characters and books. Every single one is different and always seems to go with the flow of the story as it did in Charming The Beast.

I so can’t wait to learn more about one of the other characters in the Purgatory series, Eric Pate. Sometimes I love him. Sometimes I hate him. I can’t make up my mind. Is he good? Is he bad? Is he in between? He has to be tough in order to keep the order among the para unit because lots of bad stuff happens. He handles it all pretty well, too. We don’t know what he is either. He lets on that he is not human and many of the characters suspect that he is more than meets the eye but no one seems to know. I sure hope his book is in our future soon!

If you like paranormal romance, the Purgatory series is a great one to pick up and read.  You should read The Wolf Within and Marked by the Vampire first as everything will flow so much better for you. Charming the Beast is another great book in the series and I highly recommend it!

Book Summary:

He’s a man with a beast inside…

Connor Marrok never intended to work for the Seattle Para Unit. He’s not one of the good guys—he’s a real monster, and the beast he carries doesn’t exactly play nicely. But now he finds himself being blackmailed into a new assignment. It’s supposed to be his last gig. His mission? Protect the beautiful Chloe Quick. Keep her alive. Destroy her enemies. Easy enough…until he starts to fall for Chloe.

She just wants to escape.

Chloe is tired of being a prisoner. She wants to get away from her Para Unit guard and run fast into the night. So what if Connor is the sexiest guy she’s ever met? Chloe knows trouble when she sees it, and Connor is one big, dangerous package of trouble. But, when an obsessed werewolf begins stalking Chloe, she realizes that her paranormal bodyguard may just be the one man she needs the most.

Their attraction is primal.

Every moment that Chloe and Connor spend together increases their attraction. Chloe has never felt a need so strong or a desire so dark. The beast that Chloe carries inside has always been silent, but Connor is stirring up her animal instincts.   And as the danger and desire begin to twist together, Chloe wonders just how far she’d be willing to go…in order to spend one more night in Connor’s arms.
