In The Quaker and the Rebel by Mary Ellis, you meet Emily Harrison, who is a Quaker from Ohio. She takes a position as a governess for a southern family in Virginia. She is very adamantly against slavery and is bound and determined to continue her work for the Underground Railroad behind her employers backs. You also meet Alexander Hunt, a rich Southern heir to an important horse breeding plantation. Alexander was also raised Quaker but is using a secret identity to steal Union supplies for the Rebel’s cause.
These two very different personalities meet and clash at first. They annoy each other with their strong convictions which makes for a good page turning read. Eventually they admit their attractions to each other but cant quite let go of the cause each are fighting for.
